Compact, high-speed bidirectional spirometer

High-accuracy measurement and recording of breathing cycles

This high-speed spirometer brings the very latest in aerospace sensing technology to the field of respiratory diagnostics, taking advantage of the manufacturing capabilities now available thanks to precision 3-D printing.

This instrument (dubbed the “sneezometer“, as it is fast enough to record a sneeze), currently undergoing certification trials, it emerged from fundamental research, and is being developed in conjunction with medical clinicians at King’s College Hospital in London. See the video here.

Spirometry clinical assessment

Medical diagnostics

Inexpensive and accurate, this instrument provides a highly effective alternative to conventional spirometry systems and pneumotachographs. Additional research is currently underway, as early indications suggest that the instrument is even sensitive enough to detect the onset of an asthma attack before it happens.

Sprinter on a starting block

Athletic performance tracking

Whether for elite athletes or avid amateurs, this inexpensive, compact system offers a high-precision measure of both lung capacity and breathing rate- important factors for any performance-driven athlete.

Computer-controlled process-control regulators

Process control

Although designed for medical applications, this fast flow sensor may equally be used in process control applications, where small flow rates need to be measured with very high accuracy.

Bi-directional sensitivity

Records flow rates both during inhaling and exhaling

Flow temperature sensor

Breath temperature sensor also provides indication of body core temperature

USB Connectivity

System is fully powered and driven via USB

Interchangable sampling tubes

Sampling tubes are disposable for infection control

Data recording

Data can be viewed in real-time and recorded for future reference

This system is one of the most sensitive flow meters available.

Product Details

Capabilities and performance

This high-speed, high-accuracy flow meter detects flow rates using pressure differences and our patented geometry, with high-precision sensing elements developed for use in aerospace applications.

The system uses direct-to-digital pressure transducers with built-in temperature compensation, operating at 1 kHz in sample-and-hold mode. By keeping the sensors as close as possible to the point of measurement, there is minimal signal attenuation.
